As 2024 wraps up, country music has had a pretty awesome year. But some folks think it's taken a bit of a nosedive. Newcomer Shaboozey hit it big with his first number one, "A Bar Song (Tipsy)," which held the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for 19 weeks, matching Lil Nas X's "Old Town Road" for the all-time record.
Shaboozey isn't the only one mixing things up. HARDY switched over to rock with Quit, making waves with tracks like "PSYCHO," "ROCKSTAR," "JIM BOB," "SIX FEET UNDER (Caleigh's Song)," and the title track "QUIT." Other artists jumping genres include Dua Lipa and Teddy Swims.

The big buzz this year was Beyoncé's COWBOY CARTER, her leap into country music. As with any change, there was some backlash, with social media buzzing about whether 'real country' was dead. While performing at a Texas rodeo, HARDY quipped, "Beyoncé wasn't at the rodeo." But despite the chatter, the album was a hit. The lead single "Texas Hold 'Em" debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, marking Beyoncé's ninth number one hit and becoming the most added track on country radio.
Resistance to change in country music isn't new, and Beyoncé has been in the spotlight before. She teamed up with The Chicks (formerly The Dixie Chicks) for the 50th Annual Country Music Awards, where Alan Jackson reportedly walked out in protest. At the latest CMA's, George Strait didn't look too thrilled during Shaboozey's performance of "A Bar Song (Tipsy)."

Not all crossovers get the cold shoulder, though. Post Malone's F-1 Trillion was a standout, especially with the hit "I Had Some Help" featuring Morgan Wallen, which was a contender for song of the summer. The album also included collabs with Lainey Wilson, Jelly Roll, HARDY, Chris Stapleton, and country legend Hank Williams Jr. "I Had Some Help" has been a staple on country radio since summer.

Change can be a bit uncomfortable, but it can also be good. Country music can evolve without losing its roots. Some things never change: America is the greatest country, God is good, George Strait is always the king, The Highwaymen were trailblazers, and it's always 5 o'clock somewhere. Country music is all about telling stories of the everyday person living the American Dream.
2024 has been a fantastic year for country music. We've had our ups and downs, but 2025 has the potential to be another great year for the genre.
